Magnolias were one of the first groups of flowering plants that appeared on earth. They are native to both Asia and North America. Norfolk Botanical Garden has over 250 individual magnolias, including several southern magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora), one of the iconic trees of the South.
Where to Find Them: Its large sweet flowers typically bloom in June, and the trees can be found throughout the Garden, as can our own sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana). Extremely showy, late winter to early spring-blooming Asian magnolia species and hybrids can also be seen throughout the garden, with a good concentration of them is in our Flowering Arboretum.
