Discover how five orders of native animals survive the winter months in this program led by local naturalist Maurice Cullen. You’ll explore the remarkable adaptations that help these species overwinter. The first group, Lepidoptera—butterflies and moths—features both live and previously emerged chrysalides and cocoons from several native species. You may even hold a large Imperial moth pupa as it wiggles in your hand. Learn about the many ways butterflies and moths survive winter as eggs, pupae, caterpillars, or adults. The program also covers local amphibians and reptiles and their fascinating winter adaptations. Afterwards we will take a short walk around one of the NBG lakes to make observations and discuss some of the species that overwinter. If conditions are favorable, we may even spot a basking turtle.
