Students in the Virginia Beach Environmental Studies Program (VBSchools) have been working with our Senior Director of Adult Education & Conservation Alex Cantwell to create floating wetlands as part of the Floating Futures project. This incredible project was funded through a generous grant from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.
These living islands use native plants to help clean the water, create habitats and show how green design supports healthier ecosystems. They’re small now, but in spring the plants will begin to break dormancy and reemerge.
Visitors can participate in this project as citizen scientists by using the Chronolog station at NATO Tower to take photos and help track the floating wetlands growth over time.
