What is Diversity Gallery?
Norfolk Botanical Garden invites local artists to join us in a creative exploration of the theme “Celebrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” This theme encourages artists to showcase diverse the cultures, experiences, and identities that comprise our Hampton Roads community, providing a platform to visually express how diversity enriches and strengthens us.
To participate in this special exhibit, artists must be 18 years or older and a person of color. All artworks must be suitable for wall display and equipped with an appropriate wire hanging system.
We are excited to introduce a juried component to the Diversity Gallery, offering artists the opportunity to compete for prestigious prizes and awards. In partnership with d’Art Center, the first-place winner will get a wall at d’Art Center for 3 months in 2025! Prizes will also be awarded to the second and third place winners. Winners will be selected on Feb. 8th at the Artist Reception, a public event for the community to attend.
The exhibit starts January 10, 2025, through the month of March 23, 2025.
If you have any questions regarding the application process or need further information, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can contact us at 757.441.5830 ext. 332 or via email at nate.cody@nbgs.org.

Meet Nate Cody: Creator and Curator of Diversity Gallery
Nate Cody, a dedicated Hampton Roads resident and alumnus of Menchville High School, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture + Extended Media, with a minor in Mass Communications, from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). During his time at VCU, he managed two senior art shows, curating and overseeing over 200 student artworks while successfully fundraising to cover all operational expenses.
Currently serving as the Digital Content and Marketing Project Manager at Norfolk Botanical Garden, Cody brings creativity and leadership to his role. He is also the visionary behind the Garden’s Diversity Gallery, an initiative created to advance the Garden’s mission of fostering an inclusive and welcoming community space. The Diversity Gallery highlights artists from diverse backgrounds, each sharing unique stories and identities, to connect with audiences who may not traditionally view the Garden as a place for them. Developed in partnership with the Garden’s President’s Council on Inclusion and Diversity, the Diversity Gallery stands as a testament to the Garden’s commitment to being a place for everyone.
