Virginia’s Underwater Marine Prairies: Status, Threats, and Restoration
With Dr. Christopher J. Patrick, PhD. Director, SAV Monitoring & Restoration Program, Associate Professor VIMS, William & Mary
Date/TimeMonday, April 06
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
In this hour-long presentation, we explore one of Virginia’s most remarkable and important marine habitats, seagrass meadows. Participants will 1) Receive an overview of the life history and ecology of seagrass and other SAV (submersed aquatic vegetation) in Virginia’s estuarine and marine waters, 2) Learn about the history of seagrass populations in the region over the past century, and 3) Find out how scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science are continuing to track and restore seagrass meadows. Special focus will be given to outlining the SAV aerial and ground monitoring program at VIMS, the largest and longest running of its kind in the world as well as telling the story of the highly successful restoration of eelgrass and bay scallops to Virginia’s seaside lagoons.
