Taught by photographer, Irene Hinke-Sacilotto, this three day workshop is ideal for individuals with a basic understanding of digital photography who wish to make better use of their camera features and improve their skills photographing nature.  Topics to be discussed include equipment selection; camera placement; effective use of light; exposure; composition; perspective; and close-up photo techniques. Guidance will be provided for locating, attracting, and approaching wildlife including stalking and the use of photo blinds. Safety and ethics in the field will also be considered.  This class is focused on the use of digital Single Lens Reflex (D-SLR) cameras and the principles of composition and lighting. Participants should be familiar with basic photographic terms such as F-stop, shutter speed, metering, etc. and should have basic editing skills.

After the orientation, participants will have opportunities to practice principles discussed by photographing throughout Norfolk Botanical Garden—at the ponds, lakes, the butterfly garden, wetlands, meadows, bird feeders, formal gardens, etc.  Potential wildlife subjects include songbirds, hawks, wading birds, insects, frogs, rabbits, squirrels, etc.  There are more than 30 themed gardens to explore along with a greenhouse housing bromeliads, tropical palms, exotic ferns, and orchids. Select gardens feature specific flowers such as camellias, hydrangeas, roses, etc. Offering food and shelter, the 155 acre garden is home to 95 species of birds and 30 kinds of butterflies. .  One-on-one instruction will be provided to each participant in the field.  Following the outdoor sessions, participants will select & edit their images for review mid-day Saturday  & Sunday afternoon.

Pre registration is required.
