Teen Programs

HORTICULTURE APPRENTICE TRAINING DAY – MONDAY  July 21.   Ages 13-16, Cost: $40($35 for NBG Members),  participants must bring their own lunch9am-3pm.  Includes Enrollment in the Senior Leaders in Training Volunteer Program July 22-25.

Learn about gardening from NBG’s professional horticulture staff and get hands on experience. Topics include vegetable gardening, soil basics, botany, organic gardening, native plants, tree care, wildlife in the Garden and much more! SENIOR LEADERS IN TRAINING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - June 30-July 3 &  July 22-25:  Ages 13-17, Cost: $25 ($20 for NBG Members), additional activities available at additional cost (see list at the bottom of this page), 9am-3pm (for later pick-up, participants may choose to volunteer after each program day in WOW.)

Program includes volunteer t-shirt, teen book club and morning team-building activities. Participants can choose to participate in additional afternoon art, leadership and horticulture classes for an additional fee.* While not participating in classes, volunteers will work as Docents in the WOW Children’s Garden. This is a great way to earn volunteer hours before returning to school! Volunteers must pre-register for the days they will attend, but do not need to participate in the full week.  Senior Leaders in Training may also apply to volunteer throughout the summer in the Children’s Garden, or as Summer Camp Counselors.  For more information, or to register by phone, please call the Education Office (757)441-5830 x338.

All volunteer applicants will be required to complete a Junior Volunteer Application, submit to a background check and attend a volunteer orientation prior to volunteering at Norfolk Botanical Garden.  Individuals volunteering with summer camp will also be required to submit a current TB test (negative) prior to volunteering.

Teen Classes

Origami Butterflies (Instructor Rich Gray)   Monday, June 30  1PM-4PM

Learn to make origami butterflies with instructor Rich Gray.  Hand-color your own papers or choose from other designs.  Then use your butterflies to make mobiles, jewelry, or other creative projects!  $15 per person non-members, $10 per person NBG Members and Senior Leaders in Training.  Ages 8+ (Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.)  To learn more or register for this class, click here.

Recycled Jewelry & Dried Flowers   Tuesday, July 1  10AM-11:30AM

Use paper to create a bead necklace, bottle caps and ribbon to design your own bracelet and learn to press and dry flowers for your own crafts.  $15 per person non-members, $10 per person NBG Members and Senior Leaders in Training.   Ages 8-17 (An adult must remain during the program with children 12 & under)   To learn more or register for this class, click here.

Garden Stones   Tuesday, July 1  1PM-2PM

Make a set of decorative rocks for your porch or garden!  Create a concrete garden stone mosaic using colorful ceramic, stones and shells.  Use permanent paint and markers to design a stone.  Stones will be available at the front desk 24 hours after the program.  $15 per person non-members, $10 per person NBG Members and Senior Leaders in Training.   Ages 8-17 (An adult must remain during the program with children 12 & under)   To learn more or register today, click here.

Nature Journaling  Wednesday, July 2  10AM-11:30AM

Design and create your own nature journal, then head to the Enchanted Forest to spend time observing nature and recording what you see.  Discuss with the group ways that you can creatively express your experience through art, poetry and writing.  $12 per person non-members $8 per person NBG Members and Free for Senior Leaders in Training. Papermaking (Instructor Rich Gray)  Wednesday, July 2  1PM-4PM

Moss Graffiti  Thursday, July 3  10AM-11:30AM

Orienteering  Thursday, July 3  1PM-2:30PM

Mythical & Fantastic Creatures  Thursday, July 3 2:30PM-4:00PM

Use natural materials to create and photograph your own fantastic creatures.  See photos and learn about odd and interesting animals.
