BOTANICAL SKETCHING

Capture the subtle shades of beautiful flowers and foliage

Wednesdays • 7-9PM

June 11 • BLACK & WHITE & June 18 • ADDING COLOR

Learn basic sketching skills and produce beautiful botanical sketches with art instructor Nance Corriveau. Explore the Garden looking for appropriate subjects and discover techniques such as stippling, hatching, shading and blending to make plants come alive on paper. All supplies included in class fee.

BEGINNING ONE STROKE PAINTING        

5-week session

Thursdays • June 19 – July 17 • 7-9PM

Learn easy, fun and decorative painting techniques with Lillie Crews, One-stroke instructor- Level Two Certification. Projects make great gifts! No prior painting experience required. Each week learn new strokes and design techniques while completing a different project. Cost covers all paints and five separate weekly projects.

(Set of brushes available for purchase first night of class from instructor for $12).

BITS & PIECES - Mosaic Stepping Stones

Tuesday & Thursday • July 8 & 10 • 9:30-11:30AM

Let Lifelong Learning Program Manager Betty Ann Galway teach you how to create a treasured decorative stepping stone from bits of glass and tile. You’ll want to make enough for a garden path.

 

STONE TROUGHS

Tuesdays • August 12 & 19 • 9:30-11:30AM

Join Betty Ann Galway, Lifelong Learning Program Manager in this two-day hands-on workshop making rustic hypertuffa garden planters. Dress for mess! You’ll be mixing cement and other items to form your container. The next week you’ll finish shaping the container and fill it with an assortment of plants to complete the project. Participants will be given a recipe to grow moss on the container once a weathered patina has developed.

 

LEAF CASTINGS

Tuesdays • September 23 &30 • 9:30-11:30AM

Make rustic cement garden art in this two-day hands-on workshop with Lifelong Learning Program Manager Betty Ann Galway. These castings make great bird baths, butterfly puddling stations or bird feeders. Dress for mess - you’ll be playing with cement.

BEGINNING CLAY DESIGN • Create an Ikebana vase • 3-day workshop

Thursdays • July 10-24 • 7-9PM

Come play-in-the-mud with Potter Fran Dumville and make an Ikebana style container. Your creation will go from slab to fab as you form, fire and glaze your piece. Dress for mess. All supplies included in class fee.

SUMI-E Oriental Brush Painting

5-week session

ExploreSumi-e,theancientartofChineseinkpainting. Stimulate your mind by learning a new skill with individualizedinstructionfrom sumi-e artist Norene Spencer. BeginnerswilllearntouseChinesepaintingequipmentandtechniques; those with experience will be challenged based on their skill level. The subjects for this class will be classicnaturesubjectssuchas orchids, iris and goldfish.

GARDEN PHOTOGRAPHY WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

BASIC DIGITAL WEEKEND WORKSHOP

July 18-20

Friday • 7-9PM

Saturday • 8:30AM-4PM   (Participants will break for lunch)

Sunday • 1-4PM

Point, shoot and print perfect pictures after attending this workshop.  Education Program Manager and published landscape photographer Perry Mathewes will highlight the basics of digital camera operation on Friday evening. Saturday, students will learn fundamental techniques for capturing quality images and spend time in the Garden taking photographs. A review of student photos, critique and further instruction on technique will round out the day. Sunday, students will learn simple editing, cropping and framing methods.

Bring your digital camera with operations manual, lenses, tripod, spare batteries and memory cards. Each participant will take home a framed photograph.

Cost:  $125 ($95 for NBG Members)

MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY

September 12-14

Friday • 7-9PM

Saturday • 8:30AM-4PM   (Participants will break for lunch)

Sunday • 1-4PM

Accomplished photographer Ty Brown will teach you tips and techniques for making quality close-ups and help you see the world on a whole new scale. This course is informative for both the digital and the SLR photographer. Participants should bring a camera with macro capabilities, a tripod and ASA 100 or 200 print film or a 256 memory card. On Friday, bring five sample photos for discussion and feedback following a slide presentation demonstrating the art of close-up photography. On Saturday, students will have the opportunity for one-on-one instruction – capturing the Garden’s many tiny treasures. Sunday afternoon will highlight students’ improvement as new photos are viewed for group discussion.

So many choices- where do I begin???? Gina McViegh, Professional Sommelier (wine expert) and Chef will take you on a tasting journey. Discover warm weather wines from around the world- highlighting South African wines. Participants will also learn to make an array of light hors d’oeuvres paired with wines for fun and fancy summer entertaining.

Do you have a bumper crop of tomatoes, your neighbor gave you another zucchini or you just want to take advantage of all the fresh vegetables at the market?  Let Gina McViegh, Professional Sommelier and Certified Chef, show you how to make delicious summer salads that are far from the same old thing. Enjoy tasting the summer’s bounty paired with the perfect summer wine while learning necessary knife skills.
