Chionanthus restusus
The Chinese fringetrees in our Flowering Arboretum have been nominated to the list of Remarkable Trees of Virginia and for good reason. When in bloom in May, they are nothing short of breathtaking. Normally, this olive family member grows as a dense semi-evergreen shrub to 10 feet tall; our specimens have reached tree status and are easily 35-40 feet tall. As an added bonus, waxy blue fruit follows the flowers, if a male and female are both present.
