A taste of the tropics

Wild Green Yonder is a recurring monthly feature from the staff of the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

Summer is here, and while rising temperatures may encourage our favorite flowers to bloom, it also makes us retreat indoors. Yet, outside, gardens are awake and none as much as tropical themed gardens.

One of the best places to experience the full force of what hot, humid weather and a mild climate zone have to offer is at Norfolk Botanical Garden. NBG houses an expansive tropical garden that contains hundreds of surprisingly hardy tropical and subtropical plant species that are tough enough to withstand a typical Hampton Roads winter.

While many people are familiar with the some of the “usual suspects” – begonias, African violets, palms and orchids, for instance, which bring an exotic sensation to their surroundings – the possibilities for a tropical themed garden are as seemingly endless as a tropical rainforest itself.
